Asynchronous Communication

A working style where collaboration happens through written, recorded, and documented updates rather than requiring everyone online at once.

Asynchronous ("async") communication means teams collaborate without needing to be online at the same time — through written updates, recorded walkthroughs, documented decisions, and clear tickets, rather than back-to-back live meetings.

For distributed and offshore teams, async is the operating system. It turns a timezone gap from a liability into an advantage: work moves forward around the clock, and decisions are documented instead of trapped in someone’s memory.

Async done well requires discipline — writing things down, over-communicating context, and designing work so it does not block on a live conversation.
