What it actually costs to hire remote talent in India
Real 2026 salary bands for 18 roles, in USD employer cost, next to the US onshore equivalent. Use it to set a budget you won't have to walk back.
How to read these numbers
Two things trip people up when they compare offshore salaries, so we'll be explicit:
USD figures are total employer cost (cost-to-company), not take-home. They approximate the number that hits your budget once you fold in payroll, statutory benefits, and overhead — the fair comparison against a US salary.
"US onshore" is the fully-loaded cost of the same seniority hired locally in the US. The gap between the two columns is your real saving, not a headline-salary illusion.
All bands assume full-time, dedicated remote hires. Contract or part-time rates differ.

A cost-to-company model you can copy
When you compare an offshore quote to a US salary, normalise both to cost-to-company. Here's the simple version:
US onshore, fully loaded
Base salary × 1.25–1.4. The multiplier covers employer taxes, benefits, insurance, and overhead. A $130k engineer costs you roughly $162k–$182k all-in.
Remote India via a managed team
A managed-team or EOR arrangement usually quotes one monthly figure that already includes payroll, compliance, benefits, and equipment. That number is your cost-to-company — no hidden multiplier. This is what makes the comparison clean.
Rule of thumb for 2026: for most engineering, data, and support roles, a fully-loaded remote India hire lands at 21–28% of the fully-loaded US cost for the same seniority. That's the 72–79% saving in the table above.
What moves a number within its band
Scarcity of the skill. AI, ML, and senior DevOps sit at the top of their bands because demand outstrips supply.
Timezone commitment. Roles asked to hold 4+ hours of US overlap command a premium over async-first roles.
Domain depth. Fintech, healthcare, and regulated-industry experience adds 10–20%.
Metro vs non-metro. Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, and Hyderabad run higher than tier-2 cities — though remote flattens this more each year.
Three ways teams get this wrong
Comparing take-home to fully-loaded. It makes the saving look larger than it is and sets false expectations internally.
Under-budgeting senior roles. The saving is real, but a senior AI engineer is not a $20k hire. Budget the band, not the floor.
Optimising the rate, not the fit. The cheapest candidate who leaves in four months is the most expensive hire you'll make. Vet for retention.
